The Act of Seeing
Through researching and exploring the history and the present day proliferation of female stereotypes in film, advertising and media from the perspective of the male gaze, I was lead to examine themes relating to the importance of female-lead narratives in art and on screen, reflecting the complexities of female voices that are often misrepresented. Additionally, I was interested in further unravelling traditional patriarchal frameworks by consciously exploring the diversity of individual female experiences through the use of the body, environment and space. This interaction acted as a way of communicating these experiences, in an attempt to evoke a deeper sense of empathy by drawing attention to subtle movements, texture, light, colour and shadow.
