Erasing Exercises
After how many filters does the truth come to us?
In the past history, as well as in the contemporary, the manipulation process has been the basis of every form of communication. The political and economic powers can change and reinvent their own symbols and the media have always built their testimonies.
Starting from a book on History of Ancient Art, which has been the main reference in terms of visual language of the Western world for many centuries, I have developed a project on the reconstruction (or creation?) of the memory.
Erasing Exercises is based on the transformation of documents, editing of images and creation of a new visual language that is different from the pre-existing one, making the latter almost unrecognisable: many details are lost, until their total cancellation, leading to the birth of a new document that alters or eliminates the essence of a primordial message.
The project is divided into three levels of language: the original source, its reinterpretation, which is readable in the intervention signs on the image and the text and, in the end, the copy of the transformed image. This structure, which consists of diptychs, is interrupted by single images that do not offer comparison possibility, as well as by testimonies from contemporary media.
The path between these different levels of communication is an invitation to think and research, besides the filtered truth, a new form of awareness.
