In Transit
In 2011, I started taking intercity bus lines across the United States to begin a series of pictures about bus travel. Buses connect nearly every city and town in the country. The low ticket prices and thorough coverage of service makes this mode of transportation a reasonable option for almost anyone’s budget. However, buses take a much longer period of time to reach destinations because of road conditions and frequent stops for rest breaks and layovers. If you need to travel long distances, especially across the country, the route can last several days. This extended length of travel time and, specifically, the human experience of being on a multiple day trip, is what continues to fascinate and inspire me while making this work.
When taking these photographs, I look for travelers who are on a layover sitting on a bench or leaning on a wall in an unfamiliar place. I wait until I find someone who has exhausted all the enjoyment or need from mobile devices and is simply waiting. It is in these moments when a passenger seems to almost wear the experience. I have now traveled 50,000 miles through Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Australia to work on this project. I will continue this series in the United Kingdom and Europe in 2019.
