Just East of Now

Rural Australia is dying. It once used to be a thriving, prosperous area, with millions of Australians choosing the freedom of the bush over the crowded, fast paced urban life. Recently however, many people have chosen to walk off the land and move to the cities, leaving very few remaining rural residents to grapple with the strain of such an isolated and arduous existence. This series documents my own hometown's demise, and depicts the blue collar people living lives of quiet desperation, portraying everyday struggle and ordinary tragedy, as they feel their way in dark, hoping that things will get better.

Claudia Caporn (b. 1997 in Quairading, Western Australia) is an emerging portraiture and documentary photographer based in Perth, Australia. She creates images that comment on the human condition through capturing social and cultural landscapes.

Her creative practice is informed by her upbringing on her family’s wheat and sheep farm in Quairading, in which her passion for capturing the human condition emerged. She has since moved to Perth and is completing a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Creative Advertising and Graphic Design, and Photography.

The duopoly of this parallel existence in rural Australia and urban city is deeply ingrained in her practice through the combination of her role as a flaneur, and her unusual eye in ordinary circumstances. Her works aim to give prominence to the mundane and often neglected aspects of life.

Claudia uses photography as a means of self-expression, to better understand her reality, and to communicate her interpretation of the world around her.
