Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Chukudus & Chukudeurs in Goma, D.R.C. ⠀ The Chukudu is quite unique to Eastern Congo, and particularly Goma. It’s a crossover between a bicycle and a wheelbarrow, but resembles a giant wooden scooter. ⠀ ⠀ Though it might look like a Flintsone-mobile, its ruggedness and practical simplicity makes it particularly able to navigate the potholes and puddles of Goma, loaded with up to a ton of cargo. ⠀ ⠀ It is said the Chukudu was invented in the late 70s when Mobutu’s state apparatus (and with it the country’s infrastructure) began to crumble.⠀ ⠀ In 2002 a volcanic eruption covered large parts of Goma in lava, blocking most roads in the city. Until the UN repaired roads, Chukudus were the only way to transport stuff around town.⠀ ⠀ Nowadays an experienced ‘Chukudeur‘ can make up to 20 USD a day.
