I work from an urge to make, to use my hands and my mind, and to slow down in order to reach what lies beneath the surface of a person. My portraits strip away what is unnecessary: clothing, adornment, and external context. What remains is not an identity constructed for the camera, but a presence shaped through encounter. I am not interested in likeness alone. I work toward images that sustain attention over time. As details gradually reveal themselves, a narrative begins to form. What is thought, what is carried, what remains unspoken. The portrait does not resolve these questions. It leaves space for the viewer to complete them. Slowness is central to my practice. The studio functions as a space removed from external tempo, where repetition, ritual, and precision allow both photographer and subject to settle. Within this suspended time, vulnerability can emerge. I ask those I photograph to accept uncertainty and the possibility of failure, and to trust both the process and themselves. When that trust is present, the image finds its own form. My work balances control and surrender. Technical mastery is essential, not to impose an outcome, but to understand where control can be released. I work with the wet plate collodion process for its tactile and physical qualities, and for its sensitivity beyond what the human eye alone can register. Each image is made entirely by hand. No plate is the same, and no encounter can be repeated. What is at risk in this work is presence itself. In a visual culture driven by speed, reproduction, and immediacy, I insist on duration and on the seriousness of encounter. If attention collapses, if vulnerability is withheld, the work fails. Failure is not incidental but integral, it marks the boundary where the image loses its necessity. I make this work because it is the only way I can work. It is how I test my own standards and remain accountable to them. Any recognition from the viewer arises not from persuasion, but from shared attention.
