Los viejos

This is an ongoing project. During the years 2018-20 I have worked on a project about North European pensioners in Spain. Many pensioners are turning away from the cold and the darkness to seasonally or fully settle down in Spain. It is this this group of pensioners I have chosen to depict in my new project Los Viejos (Spanish for The Elderly). My intention is to depict what happens on the surface as well as within when we age, and how the body – and our perception of it- changes. I also want to depict how life in Spain might look when you at a mature age are trying to find a new social context in a place where you might not know the language, I have chosen to photograph in Spain because the warmer climate makes it more naturalto photograph undressed bodies. Finding a new social context at an old age is also oftentimes more prominent for pensioners who have chosen to uproot and move than those who have decided to stay in their native countries I have photographed on several locations in Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. In order to create social ties with the pensioners I have met and photographed I participated in various group activities, including evening dance events, book circles, churchactivities, playing boules, hiking and also in the pensioners own homes.

Kicki Lundgren

Kicki Lundgren lives and work in Uppsala, Sweden.
She attended Nordic Photo School in Stockholm from 1989 and graduated 1992.
Kicki works almost exclusively with longer personal projects that are made into books and displayed at exhibitions. She has published three books and hosted several exhibitions.
In much of her work humans are depicted in nature, in such a way that humans and nature almost become one. The clearest example of this is the book Floating, Journal 2016, where beachgoers are photographed swimming in the ocean. Floating has also become a still film with music from the music duo Gone North. The still film Floating had its premiere at Uppsala Photo Festival with over 800 visitors.
Nature also features in her earlier projects. In “Där tiden har stått stilla – bilder från Kurdistan”, Apec 2002, people from small villages in Kurdistan were photographed, oftentimes in nature.
Her projects are always centred around human beings as you can see in the project 500-5 mph, Journal 2018.
Kicki’s current project deals with aging and depicts pensioners who are fully or partially resided in Costa del Sol in Spain.
