FUTURE FARMING
FUTURE FARMING
In 2000, The Netherlands committed to producing twice as much food, while using half as many resources. This was in response to concerns about food availability amid a worldwide population growth.
The Challenge:
In apocalyptic terms, the planet must produce more food in the next four decades than all farmers together have harvested over the past 8,000 years.
The Outcome:
It’s certainly delivered.
By investing research in areas like LED lighting and climate controle, Dutch farms - including greenhouses - can grow crops in any weather. In fact, The Netherlands, is the second largest exporter of food as measured in value, second only to the US, which is 270 times its size.
Facts:
Since 2000 farmers have:
- reduced the water dependency for key crops by 90%
- almost completely eliminated the use of chemical pesticides on greenhouse plants.
- Dutch livestock producers have cut the use of antibiotics by as much as 60%
This serie is a hommage to the researchers of Wageningen University who try to work out solutions for the future of our planet and mankind.
