Homeland
I was born in Bologna but my mother is from Sicily and the largest part of my family lives there, altough many are scattered around Northern Italy, Germany, France, United States and Australia.
Since I was a child I have always spent holidays on the island, and there I have memories of my happiest and carefree days.
Over time I have developed a diverse vision and interest in this island and what more than anything leads me to visit it regularly: my grandfather Concetto, 96 years old on 28 July 2017.
I decided to pursue a photographic project that had him at the center of a narrative that aims to investigate an intimate reality, at the same time universal and familiar, in a dreamlike atmosphere that looks at apparently trivial and common things.
The pictures were taken from year 2015, every six months, lately most on medium format camera as the project was becoming clear and taking shape. This series is a little selection of what aims to be a book.
“Another fifteen years had passed after those, a thousand kilometers from there, from Sicily and from my childhood, and I was almost thirty years, and it was as if I had not had anything, nor the first fifteen, nor the second [... ] And so it was like a dark longing in me to get back to my childhood.“
Elio Vittorini, Conversations in Sicily, Einaudi, 1974
